Knowing Your Master

The air has taken on the chill of late autumn and we know that it is time to begin making preparations for the winter that is soon to come.  With leaves crackling underfoot, my husband Rick moves back and forth around the yard, putting away tools, covering the most fragile plants with straw and cultivating the gardens before the snow falls.

Each time I catch a glimpse of him I notice he has a shadow: our dog Faith.  She follows him wherever he goes, searching his eyes for approval.  She lives for his smiles, pats and scratches.  All she wants is to please him.  He is her master and she knows from experience that he will care for her, tending to her needs for food, water and affection.  She lives a simple and pure trust, with no need to worry, for she knows the source of her provisions.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD,  make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8 NIV

I wonder if my Master could say the same about me.  Am I living my life for my own benefit or to please Him?  Do I care more about what He thinks of me or am I trying to find approval from others?  Do I slow down long enough to look in His eyes or wait to hear His still, small voice speak to me of His love?

Instead of allowing anxiety to capture my thoughts creating useless  stress, do I stop to remember the goodness of God?

I believe that Paul taught us to rejoice because as we thank and praise God we recall all that He has done for us in the past, in the same way Faith relies on her memories of Rick’s care for her.

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!  Philippians 4:4 NKJV

Take some time today to meditate on the greatness of our God, not only for what He has done, but simply for Who He Is.  Then join with me in joyful praise, just like the psalmist David.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.  My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.  Psalm 28:7 NIV

Keep living and loving for His glory,
