Portable God

A sudden intake of air is followed by a squeal. “Mommy!!!” My baby girl calls my name and her feet do a dance on the mattress of her crib. She runs across the crib and grabs her bear, scooting back to the rail as quick as she can, lifting one arm for me to lift her.

She motions with her other arm wrapped tightly around her coveted animal. “Bear wif us,” she tells me. “Bear wif us.” She repeats herself until I assure her that bear can come “wif us” to get some breakfast downstairs.

Tomorrow the scene will be repeated. The only difference will be her choice of item. She rotates through the items in her bed. And if we go out for the day, the scenario changes only slightly as we scurry out the door. My tiny girl will assuredly pick a favorite toy to go “wif us.”

No matter where we go, my daughter Grace wants a familiar friend to tag along.

As I sat in Sunday school last week, I listened as our teacher talked about the amazing the gift of the Holy Spirit. “With the Holy Spirit, we carry God wherever we go.” My husband leaned over and whispered in my ear, “God wif us.”

I laughed thinking of Grace, but realized that statement truly was remarkable. We have a God who lives within us. Everywhere we go, He goes. We take him “wif us.”

Christ himself tells us, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 NIV (emphasis mine)

So dear friends, if you know Christ, then step out of your bed today with confidence – God, through the Holy Spirit goes with you. When you walk out of your home, go boldly living out the Truth, because you are not alone.

You see, wherever we go and whatever we do, we can smile because we are taking “God wif us.”

  1. I LOVE this! What a happy-happy-joy-joy feeling you gave me. (as my own daughter used to say) Your husbands remark in SS made me grin. This is an application I won’t forget. Thank you for the blessing!
