It’s All a Matter of Perspective

I graded my son’s math sheet and handed it back to him to be corrected.

“Hey man, you need to look at this one problem right here it’s not right, ” I said to him.

He picked up the paper, took a look at it and said, “Well…at least I got all the other ones right.”

It’s all a matter of perspective.

I had focused on the problem he got wrong. My son, however, focused on the all the ones he got right.

Perspective.

Is the glass half full or half empty?

Perspective.

“I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13, NIV

Paul, the writer of Philippians, was content with his life because he could see life from God’s perspective. He focused on what he was supposed to do, not what he felt he should have. The glass was half full for him and all the other math problems were correct. Paul was grateful for everything God had given him, the good, the bad, and the ugly. He had detached himself from the non-essentials in his life so that he could concentrate on the eternal. His perspective was God and God alone.

Often times the desire for more or better possessions is really a longing to fill an empty place in our lives. Paul had so allowed God to fill him up that he had strength to withstand anything he came up against, and boy howdy, did he come against some heavy duty stuff; prison, beatings, rejection, loneliness.

I wonder, are there any empty places in your life today? What are you trying to fill that emptiness with, a job, an unhealthy relationship, money, food, drugs or alcohol, the list could go on and on? In Psalm 81:10, the Lord tells us to open up wide and let Him fill us up.

Sweet sister, detach yourself from those non-essential things in your life so that you can focus on the eternal, everlasting God and allow Him to fill you until your cup runneth over.

If you are struggling with feeling empty and weak today, Lori and I would love to be able to pray with you and for you. You can leave a comment or if you’d feel more comfortable, you can contact us personally here at the cafe.

I always try to focus on the positive too. It’s so easy to let negative things get us down. I think your son has a great outlook!

Please pray for me. I am in a unhealthy relationship and I struggle with depression. Although my heart realizes the battle is not mine but the Lords my mind doesn’t realize that concept. Thank you for your prayers.

Praying for you Le-Teisha. I pray your relationship be healed in whatever way God chooses that healing to come. Cast all your cares upon the Lord and He will care for you. Arm yourself with His armor because the battle we are in is not a battle against flesh and blood but against the enemies of this dark world. Fix your thoughts on God and allow His peace to reign supreme.

      Blessings,
      Jenifer

Thank you for sharing about emptiness and how we tend to fill that void. I am truly at a place where I for the first time, can recognize that I am a broken person… lots of holes left in me from my past and things that people have done to me. I fill that void with food and poor relationships. This past month I have begun to realize that God wants to fill those holes and voids in me, I just have to let Him. I am trying, not an easy thing for me, but I am trying!
Blessings for sharing and helping me with you blog postings!

Oh Janet…I have so been where you are! God does want to fill all those voids in your heart with Himself. And, He will do it. Continue to sit at His feet, allowing Him to heal you and fill you up to overflowing.

      Blessings,

I love that you used the cup analogy because Jesus says that He gives of Living Water freely….we just have to thirst for it!

We will never be thirsty or in need with Christ because He has a never-ending flow for us. The world will always leave us wanting more, but not Jesus!

Alisa, I didn’t even make the connection with the cup and thirsting after the Living Water, but you are so right!!! He is our never-ending flow of life!!!

What a beautiful analogy and heartfelt post. I was so moved by the comments as well. Praying Romans 15:13 for each one: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Amen. Thank you for feeding my soul with the good stuff today.

This was the first time I have been on this website but this post was definitely what I needed to read today. I have been trying to fill the voids in my life with food. But what I really need is the “Bread of Life”.

I am at a loss for words. I often miss the closeness that I once felt with God and notice that I do try to fill it… Even with things that most people see as good thing, like service in the church. But I always struggle with the food part. I wish that my brain and my heart would get in the same page!
