What’s in Your Beach Bag?

It IS that time of year again!

Time for FUN in the SUN!

I am a proponent of “God is in the details.” Being the chronic organizer that I am, I was gathering up the “essential” beach/pool bag supplies, and  it occurred to me that these little “summer time sundries” serve as spiritual reminders as well! God is in the details I tell ya.

In our beach/pool bag this summer you’ll find a few necessities that will make any day at the beach or pool a much nicer experience. It wasn’t until recently that I saw a few extra details that God Himself tucked in….

~Sunscreen

I’m not the burner in the group, but I’ve learned that my freckle faced people NEED an spf factor with three digits. They burn.  I know those  initials traditionally stand for SUN PROTECTION FACTOR, but for a moment let’s change that “S” to SATAN and the higher we go…the greater the armor we wear! Makes you think about going with that 72 SPF doesn’t it?
I’m calling it SUMMERTIME ARMOR.

“Put on the FULL ARMOR of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Ephesians 6:11

Water Bottle~

It’s easy to get dehydrated in the scorching summer sun and I never leave home without my jug O’ water. Where’s this going? It’s also a reminder of where  the “living water” can be found. So as you gulp and quench your thirst this summer, be reminded;

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
John 7:38

A Few toys, like a SAND SHOVEL~

My kids are getting to the ages where our beach bag has whittled down to just a few items. They are “too cool” for pool toys, but no one wants to sit at the beach without a shovel! Even the biggest of kids are up for “burying” someone head to toe.  That simple sand shovel serves as another reminder. Be careful where you “build that sandcastle,”  for they are prone to waves.

“But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.””
Matthew 7: 26-27

Flip Flops~

Those fanciful, colorful FUN shoes are one thing we can’t leave home without! We are a flip flop kind of family. But a message in footwear?  The message in the flip flops is unmistakable. Walking in the footsteps of Christ is ever on my mind as I glance down at my “flip flopped” feet.

“Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of understanding.”
Proverbs 9:6

Umbrella~

Don’t leave home without one!
Those summer storms can be unpredictable! They “pop up” at a moment’s notice.  Not to mention arriving at the beach to see that all of the “umbrella chairs” have been taken. Traveling with an umbrella is always wise! Again, a detail that serves as a  reminder for our lives.  HE is our “shelter in the storm.”

“I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.”
Psalm 61:4

Sunglasses~

Essential for eye protection. This season, the bigger the better apparently.  I’m reminded how important my VISION is. The sunglasses remind me where my own eyes need to be “fixed.” Forgetting that can make for a miserable day!

“But my eyes are fixed on you, O Sovereign LORD; in you I take refuge”
Psalm 141:8

With the beach/pool bag packed, I realized that we take far more with us than we realize.  These summer essentials became life~essentials. This summer we’ll pack up the USUAL items, but their meaning is going far beyond just “filling the bag.”
This summer,  I’ll be paying a little bit of extra attention to the details God leaves along the way.

  12. This is great. I am going to memorize Colossians 3:17 and ask myself the question throughout the day, Is this going to bring honor to Christ? I bet I will not say or do a lot of things if I ask myself this question first. I pray that God will help me pause to ask this question, before I say or do anything.

  13. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity! How about a BEACH TOWEL to remind us of when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. He wants us to serve others in his name. John 13:5, “After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”
