I do not watch “daytime t.v.” on a regular basis but I have occasionally watched a show if there is going to be a topic addressed that I find interesting. I happened to see an advertisement about one particular show and decided that I would watch. The show featured 30, 40, and 50 year old women, and taught them how they should be dressing for their age.
Okay….Here are hundreds of women in the audience, not to mention probably millions of women in their living rooms, (including ME!!!) waiting to get their directions from the “experts” about what they need to be wearing this season! They took women who were wearing practical comfortable clothes and dressed them up in high heeled boots, skinny jeans, low cut tops, mini skirts and fish net stockings—TO WEAR TO THE GROCERY STORE!
I! AM! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! SURE!
As each women paraded out in their “new look,” everyone “ooohed” and “ahhhhhhed” and applauded. The women would make comments like “I feel fantastic!” “I feel so sexy!”
Here’s what I learned that day:
-a patent leather jacket and purse are considered a “MUST HAVE”!!!
-If you wear high heeled boots, fish net stockings (“small” fishnet stockings, NOT the big ones…we wouldn’t want to look cheap!)or skinny jeans to the grocery store you will get more respect from those around you.
-You can look sexy at any age-and apparently THAT is important!
-You MUST NOT wear sneakers to the grocery store. That looks JUST AWFUL! That is a TERRIBLE thing to do. SNEAKERS ARE FOR THE GYM!
-Women who wear sweat suits during the day are called “slumpadinkas”! (I don’t they were implying that was a GOOD thing!)
-Paying $300.00-$400.00 for one outfit is a bargain and considered “low end” prices.
-A black turtleneck, a dark denim jacket (NOT light denim! How could you even THINK of wearing light denim???) black dress pants, and silver spiked heels are all things we MUST HAVE!
-Your purse DOES NOT have to match your outfit anymore. That would be considered out dated!
Listen, I like to dress nicely. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always loved being a girl, getting my hair done and wearing makeup. But after watching this show I was reminded of just how self focused and materialistic our society is. As I look around me I see women, including myself at times, getting totally sucked into this mentality. And although I do very much enjoy finding the “right” clothes, makeup, etc., It can be easy to be influenced by what our society tells us we “must have” or what we “must look like“.
As women, if we are not careful, we will buy into to what our society holds up as our standard. While in the grocery store I see magazine after magazine that dictates to us what we should be wearing. I have seen several magazines that target women who are in their 40′s and 50′s and encourage them to dress and carry themselves in a way that draws attention to their bodies and to look young and sexy. These magazines also promote products that promise to work miracles on our aging bodies.
I love this quote:
“How does a woman discern the sometimes fine line between proper dress and dressing to be the center of attention? The answer starts in the intent of the heart. A woman should examine her motives and goals for the way she dresses. Is her intent to show the grace and beauty of womanhood? Is it to reveal a humble heart devoted to worshiping God? Or is it to call attention to herself and flaunt her beauty? Or worse, to attempt to lure men sexually? A woman who focuses on worshiping God will consider careful how she is dressed, because her heart will dictate her wardrobe and appearance.”
“…Women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control…” 2 Timothy 2:9,10
What am I allowing myself to be influenced by?
Who do I allow to dictate to me what I should be wearing?
How am I representing the God I claim to love and live for?
Do I know the details of how God wants us to live as well as I know the details of what is in fashion?
Am I seeking to become conformed to the image of Christ…or the image that our ever changing society throws in front of our faces?
Well, I guess I should be going to the grocery store. I need to go put on my sneakers…I MEAN…my silver spiked heels!
Do you think they’ll look okay with black Adidas sweats?

I love this my friend.

Am so with you on this today!
I have thought that many “fashion experts” are not living “real lives” that real women lead, lives where sweats and sneakers, jeans and living by a budget (not the god of the next trend) determines our decisions. It can be so easy to be pressured by our society and even within the church, but what a great quote and scripture you gave today, reminding us of what God really values. I admit …. I didn’t get dressed yet, but this was perfect to read before I do!

Wow! That show blows my mind! I have never seen one do the opposite of what most makeover shows do.
If I want to wear sneakers to the store I am going to! Lol…horrible!
The intent of your heart is true, if we start dressing like the “experts” say were are definately going to attract sinful desires and temptation. Yuck!

This was a great post, and something that I’m afraid I need to be reminded of all too often. As a woman in her mid-twenties I often feel the pressure to dress on trend, and to continue purchasing and purchasing for my wardrobe. I have plenty of clothes. I could probably get dressed everyday for a month and not have to repeat more than a few outfits… that’s crazy to think about, and yet I always find myself wanting more clothing… and blogging certainly doesn’t help it seems like every other blog is about what the latest trend is, or about some great item that someone found on sale… I really need to turn this area of my heart over to the Lord so he can give me a new Heart for my old, selfish, broken one!

Good heavens, and I think I’m doing good if I put on jeans instead of yoga pants to go to the grocery store. Ha!

Oh boy, you had me laughing today
I can’t believe how easily we buy into the hype that we need to look like the sexy center of attention all the time. What a timely post!
