God, I Want To Do BIG Things!

So my buddy Dee and I are driving to a writer’s conference about 2 hours from home. We’re excited to check into our hotel and look for a scrumptious place to eat because face it…a night away with a girlfriend means nothing if you don’t smother it with melted cheese.

We’re so excited to be attending our second writer’s conference! The first one was a blast once I got past the humiliation of wearing my dress backwards. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

So, we’re driving up and down this four lane divided highway looking for our hotel. The road is lined with hotels but ours is on a cross street and we can’t find it. Dee’s looking to the right, I’m looking to the left…nothing. The map says it’s off this road…but where?!!!!

As I’m looking at the cross street signs I see the name of the street we’re looking for…only, the sign is facing the wrong way.

Yes, yes…we were ON the road we were looking for.  (sighs and hangs head)

We vowed never to tell a soul, so please keep this to yourselves lest Dee finds out that I’ve spilled the beans.

I can’t believe that I got lost on the street I was looking for.

But think about it, how many of us do that very same thing with our lives?

We go here and there searching for the right road. We don’t realize that maybe if we took the time to pay attention we ARE on the right road. Maybe the “next best thing” is really highly overrated and just a whole lot of hype that amounts to nothing.

Or possibly it’s that we are seeing all the places that everyone else is going and we think…hey I want to go THERE. THAT road must be the right one because everyone is heading down it.

What if that’s not what God wants for you at all, and He wants you content with the current road you’re traveling on.

Sure, you may not stay on this road the rest of your life, but what if you can’t find God’s will because you’re standing on it just like my glasses that get lost on top of my head all the time.

We always tend to want the BIG things! God’s doing big things!! And yes, He is, He always is. But what if the big thing to do right now is to wait upon the Lord and serve Him faithfully right where you are.

Paul said in 1 Tim 1:12 “How thankful I am to Christ Jesus our Lord for considering me trustworthy and appointing me to serve Him”     ( New Living Translation)

Serve where He has you and let Him open the new doors or should I say, show you where to turn.

Thank you Sue. I needed to hear that today. I know that God has gifted me a certain way and I get to use that for Him and He will bless it as He sees fit. There is no sense in me looking to the right or left, only straight ahead at Him.
    Thank you.

To serve right where I am now. To be His eyes, hands, legs and really useful for Him right now, not just occupying space, hmmm thats my heartfelt prayer. Thanks Sue

Wow! This totally made me stop in my tracks…because I always seem to be looking for the greener grass instead of realizing where I really am is probably where I am supposed to be. Thanks for sharing!

Oh girl you have got me right where I live. I really needed to be reminded of this today. Thank you for being faithful and sharing what God puts on your heart…even if it’s a little embarrassing.

BTW…I do that ALL the time! :)

Great post. Enjoyed the humor along with the wisdom. Thank you for the reminder that we’re always looking for the Big thing God want s to do and missing where He has us at this very moment. I’ll try to remember to wait on the Lord and serve Him where He has me.
    Thank you for sharing.

Well, now the world knows we were lost on the road we were actually on. But the rest of it you wrote on was great! And if we had a cool pink ride like the car in the picture, well, I would have been lost on the road we were on for a good time longer than the long time we were actually lost on it. Love ya!

Thanks for this one! We are in a transition of job/husband in school, financial stresses, etc. and I find myself over the last week or two wondering/praying for the “road to change”. I like the reminder to be “content” with the road He has us on and to know that as long as we keep Him with us—we’ll enjoy the journey!! I thank you for letting God speak to me through you!!!

Thanks for your post. I completely identify with this particular one. Much of my life has been devoted to hunting down “bigger and better” things. I was so uncommited in every aspect of my life (where I lived, my different jobs, people I dated, etc..). I’m not sure if it was just chronic discontentment, or if I really loved novelty, and chasing new opportunities. As soon as I got the job that I just HAD to have, the rose colored glasses came off, and suddenly I started searching for my next big thing.
I kid you not, one night I remember praying to God to help me find some roots and contentment in life. I meant it, and God must’ve heard. I was also lonely (due to me moving all over the place, I had no friends/family in the new town), and for the first time really prayed to God to bring me someone special into my life to take away my lonliness. That was a little over 2 years ago. Since then, many things have happened. I am now a newlywed, and we are working together to launch our online christian business (Ministry Visuals) soon. Life has calmed down, and I’ve found not only contentment, but joy. Perhaps that’s what God had in mind all along…a young christian couple starting a business/ministry that will spread God’s word. Funny how life unfolds sometimes, isn’t it?
I’m rambling, I know…your piece touched my heart, and I’m so thankful of the BIG yet simple things God has done in my life!

Thank you so much for sharing what God put in your heart to share. It was just what I needed to hear. I do want to do BIG things for Him and your devo helped show me that maybe where I am right now is as big as God wants my witness for Him to be.
    Thanks and God Bless!
